The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical physical horror, but within Together lies a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that come with most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
