A group of seven alleged members of Germany's left-wing extremist group face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was behind targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
